tree it would not have grown to naturity, had it aimed at anything but
a scholars enjoyment. It came into being for the pleasure of making it; and it should be read for the pleasure of reading it. The texts'
at any rate, were written for the pleasure of writing them, for the
unabashedly elitist pleasure of punning in the jargon of oners
coterie, of alluding in a most unorthodox way to the most unlikely
sources, of playing with kanjis like a cat with a mouse' of flaunting
with equal nonchalance salacious wit and egregious learning -- and it is expected of those who scrutinize these writings that they be
willing, and indeed able to share this esprit. Or else' they will not
be amused.
